What Are Automatic Knives?

An automatic knife is any knife that opens with a mechanical mechanism — a button, switch, or lever — rather than manual force. The term covers several distinct types, each with a different mechanism, feel, and purpose.

Types of Automatic Knives

OTF (Out-the-Front)

Blade deploys straight out from the top of the handle via a thumb slide. Available in single-action (spring open, manual close) and dual-action (spring open and close).

Best for: EDC, tactical, one-handed use

Switchblade (Side-Opening)

Blade swings out from the side of the handle when a button or lever is pressed. The classic "switchblade" — fast, reliable, iconic.

Best for: Traditional carry, collectors

Spring-Assisted

Starts opening manually — then a spring takes over and snaps the blade into the locked position. Not fully automatic, but fast.

All Legal in Texas

Texas House Bill 1935 (2017) removed nearly all knife restrictions. Switchblades, OTFs, stilettos, and spring-assisted knives are all legal to own, carry openly or concealed, with no blade length limits for adults 18+.

Location restrictions apply to knives with blades over 5.5" in schools, courts, polling places, and secured airport areas.
