OTF Knives

An OTF knife — out-the-front — deploys the blade straight through the top of the handle. Slide the thumb switch forward, the blade fires out the front. Pull it back, the blade retracts. That linear action is what makes an OTF mechanically distinct from every side-opening automatic on the market. The blade doesn't swing. It drives. And that difference changes everything about how the knife carries, deploys, and handles in real-world use.

We carry both double-action and single-action OTF knives across a range of blade lengths, handle materials, and price points. Double-action models deploy and retract with the same thumb slider — the most popular configuration for everyday carry. Single-action OTFs fire the blade out under spring power but require a manual reset, trading convenience for stronger lockup and greater deployment force. Whether you're looking for a compact EDC out-the-front knife or a full-size tactical OTF, understanding which action type fits your use matters more than any brand name on the handle.

Buying Guide: What to Look for in an OTF Knife

Out-the-front knives are mechanically more complex than side-opening automatics, and that complexity means quality differences show up fast. The internal track and spring assembly that drives the blade forward and locks it in place is doing real engineering work — tolerances matter, materials matter, and assembly quality determines whether your OTF deploys reliably after a thousand cycles or starts misfiring after fifty. A quality OTF knife should fire cleanly every time, lock up with minimal blade play, and retract without hesitation.

Blade play is the single biggest indicator of OTF quality. Some amount of lateral movement is inherent to the sliding-blade design — the blade has to clear the track — but well-made OTF knives minimize it to the point where it doesn't affect cutting performance. If an OTF blade wiggles noticeably at full extension, the internal tolerances aren't where they should be. Price usually reflects this: budget OTF knives cut corners on the track system, while premium models machine their internals to tighter specifications.

OTF Knives vs. Traditional Automatic Knives

Both are spring-powered automatics, but the deployment geometry is completely different. A traditional automatic swings the blade out from the side on a pivot — identical motion to a folding knife, just spring-assisted. An OTF drives the blade forward in a straight line through the handle. This means OTF knives tend to be slimmer in the pocket since the blade nests inside the handle rather than folding alongside it. The tradeoff is that OTF mechanisms require more maintenance, can be sensitive to debris in the track, and generally produce slightly less lockup strength than a well-made side-opening auto. Neither design is universally better — they solve different carry and deployment problems.
